Galliyon ka ik alag nazariya - A different perspective of the streets!

Dear neighbours-in-this-enigma-we-call-Mumbai -
Sometimes, it takes a fresh pair of eyes to help us discover the vitality in our seemingly humdrum lives, a blank slate to absorb everything we take for granted. This week, the National Streets for Performing Arts (NSPA) team welcomed our long awaited intern from Zurich, Switzerland - 15 year old India Matheson - a singer who has joined ranks with our seasoned classical, folk and fusion street performers, and added some Swiss melodies into the musical potpourri the NSPA encourages!
Her fascination with the ordinary - the Nariman Point docks in the afternoon heat, sour tamarind and mango sweets from the roadside paan waala, shared taxis and shared sabudana wadas - reminds us of Octavio Paz's writings about his first impression of Mumbai in 1951 -
"I ran down the stairs and plunged into the streets. There, awaiting me, was an unimagined reality:
waves of heat; torrents of cars, rivers of bicycles, red betel stains on the sidewalk, horn battles between a taxi and a dusty bus, another half-naked saint, the apparition of a girl like a half-opened flower, gusts of stench, decomposing matter, whiffs of pure and fresh perfumes, stalls selling coconuts and slices of pineapple, women in red, blue, yellow, deliriously colored saris..."

The (Sun)days of our lives!

Our Konkani folk singer Heloise Saldanha and folk guitarist Clint Braganza performed at Tridha School's Sunday brunch on the 21st, and the intimate susegado atmosphere created by Goan melodies accompanied by Tridha's parents and young children made for the kind of family-oriented Sunday that exists in theory and very little in practice! A Bombaiya masala ended a morning that included Goan folk tales (followed by enthusiastic jive dances from some audience members!) and Punjabi, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati and Tamil tunes (and the "Birdy Dance"!) that regaled both parents and the little ones. We return to Tridha for their December mela!

Busking at the Hive! -

NSPA's first showcase at Chuim Village's (Khar) community space The Hive takes place on Sunday the 28th, from 7 - 10 pm. Our jazz and rock singers/guitarists Anusha and Rachel will be collaborating for the first time with NSPA veteran artists, Carnatic classical violinist Mukund and multi-percussionist Dakshinamurthy. ONE DAY - 22 RAILWAY STATIONS - 22 STREET MUSICIANS!

The NSPA celebrates Gandhi Jayanti (Oct 2nd) with the Central and Western Railways, who are conducting a "Cleanliness Drive" at 22 railway stations, and guess who volunteered to give musical accompaniment to the worthy cause?! From 10 am - 6 pm, 22 of our musicians will be performing at stations ranging Churchgate to Borivali, and CST to Thane! If you bump into them, do take a minute and enjoy the unique experience - and mail us about them! As always, our Leaping Windows comic book library and cafe (Versova) performances continue every Thursday from 8 - 10 pm, and our Gold's Gym (Marol) performances continue on Thursdays from 7.30 - 8.30 pm.
